Our Duty to the Community

Some people are too ambitious. They want to do this, and they want to do that. But they do not reflect which of the things they really have the ability to do. Others are too pessimistic. They think that everything in this world is out of order and not a single person can be found who is the right man in the right place. They criticize, but they do not work. Neither the former nor the latter can do anything useful to the community. The duty of a man to the community is to do something that is really helpful, not only to himself, but also to the community at large. And in order to do this duty, one must, first of all, choose a suitable occupation. Thomas Carlyle honored two men, the toil-worn craftsmen and the inspired thinkers. He honored them because mankind is benefited by them. Indeed, a farmer or a workman is as respectable as a president or a governor, so far as the good he can do to the community is concerned. It is the idler who is contemptible. Suppose there were a load of one hundred pounds in weight. This would, of course, be impossible for a single man to lift. To ten men the work would be an easy task. But if one of the ten did not exert his strength, his part of the work would be divided among the other nine. So it is with the idlers of the community. They do nothing themselves, but keep other people busy working for them. Therefore, an idler may be called a traitor to the community. It would seem that ambitious people are more useful to the community than pessimistic ones, because the latter never attempt to do anything, while the former always look for something to do. In my opinion, however, neither of the two classes excels the other in merit. Ambitious people, actuated by secret motives to do everything, often try to do many things at one time with the result of having nothing accomplished. Pessimists are able to do something, but as they never attempt to do anything they also accomplish nothing. Therefore, the results are just the same. On the other hand, people who can do their duty to the community are neither ambitious nor pessimistic, but do what their duty requires them to do.

Your angel

Once upon a time there was a child ready to be born. So one day he asked God, “They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow but how am I going to live there being so small and helpless?”

God replied, “Among the many angels, I chose one for you. She will be waiting for you and will take care of you.”

But the child wasn't sure he really wanted to go. “But tell me, here in Heaven, I don't do anything else but sing and smile, that's enough for me to be happy.”

“Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you every day. And you will feel your angel's love and be happy.”

“And how am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me,” the child continued, “if I don't know the language that men talk?”

God patted him on the head and said, “Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will ever hear, and with much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak.”

“And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?”

But God had an answer for that question too. “Your angel will place your hands together and will teach you how to pray.”

“I've heard that on earth there are bad men, who will protect me?”

“Your angel will defend you even if it means risking her life!”

“But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore,” the child continued warily.

God smiled on the young one. “Your angel will always talk to you about me and will teach you the way for you to come back to me, even though I will always be next to you.”

At that moment there was much peace in Heaven, but voices from earth could already be heard. The child knew he had to start on his journey very soon. He asked God one more question, softly, “Oh God, if I am about to leave now, please tell me my angel's name.”

God touched the child on the shoulder and answered, “Your angel's name is not hard to remember. You will simply call her Mommy.”

Do It Anyway

I'm not sure.
I'm never sure.
I don't know.
and I never know...

But I do it anyway.
I say it anyway.
I think it anyway.

Pain isn't as scary, or painful when you expect it,
And the glory is twice as good when you get it.
The way i see it, even if you do something that terrifies you,
even if you get hurt, the hurt physical or otherwise,
Isn't as great...
Because you overcame fear.
That's a triumph greater than any pain can take away from.

Pain, fear, paranoia, abandonment...
Points of View.
Perspective.

I'm not sure where this is going.

Chapter 2

The first foreign historical movie I saw is “General Patton”. A line of this movie impressed me deeply—Thirty years from now, you are sitting on your fireside with a grandson on your knee, and he asks you “What did you do in the great World War Ⅱ?”You will not have to say “Well, I shoveled shits in Louisiana.”I didn’t know that my grandpa had struggled and strived in that Great War until I was a primary school student.I would never forget that day when I became a member of the Red Scarf—Young Pioneers. I bounced into my grandpa’s garden, brimming with happiness. He was watering the flowers there. His white hair was dyed golden in the midday sunshine. He put aside the water pot and sat down on a wooden bench. He took my schoolbag off and arranged my clothes. I could tell that he was more careful and attentive when he was arranging my new red scarf.“Congratulations! New young pioneer!” he said to me smiling, “I am proud of you!”“Oh, grandpa! You owe me an award. What gift are you going to give me?”“Ok, what gift do you want?”“Uh…” I thought for a while, “I wonder what is in your locked drawer. Could you show that to me? It must be the most interesting and fantastic thing of your life.”“That’s right. A really magnificent and significant thing to me. If you promise to turn back and close your eyes, I will show it to you.”“Oh, I promise and pledge that!”Immediately I turned back and shut my eyes. I could hear that his key was opening a paradise for me. My eager heart almost beat to my throat. Every passing second was suffering for me and I felt that it was one thousand years before my grandpa told me to turn back again. In his palm, there was a red metal five-pointed star with some rust spots on it. Although age had faded its brightness, I could tell that it had been preserved very well.“Where did you get it, grander?” I asked curiously.“About fifty years ago, a greatest misery befell in our motherland. The Japanese Empire waged an aggressive war totally towards our nation. Within a few months, half of territory was lost. My hometown was seized by those devils. They did all evils there. One of my cousins was bayoneted to death by them.”“Where were the policemen? Where were the soldiers?” I couldn’t believe my ears.“The corrupted government didn’t organize any effective resistance against the enemy. The enemy drove straight into our hinterland. Those civilians who didn’t escape in time were massacred.”“Oh, grandpa! We had to do something. What happened then? What did you do in that Great War?“In 1943, one night I was about to go to bed when one of my laborer friends came to my house. He said that a resistance army was recruiting and he wanted me to join the army with him. That day was a turning point in my life. I started my career as a soldier.”“Terrific! Did you kick them on their asses?” I said excitedly.“It was not easy to make them surrender although we gain the victory. I lost one of my close comrades in the war.It was a dark night in the late winter. He was sending messages through the battle line under tremendously roaring artillery fire. He was shot and died in the battlefield with a diary in his chest pocket. In one page of the diary, he wrote—for the country and for the people, I will struggle; I will strive; I will stride; I will sacrifice; I will not surrender, now or ever!” Grandpa’s voice was trembling when he recalled his sincerest comrade.Tears flooded my eyes before I came to my consciousness. I was absolutely absorbed in my grandpa’s story. That day is a turning point in the life. Not only because I became a Young Pioneer but also there was a trumpet in my heart summoning me.I was summoned by virtue not evil.I was summoned by myself not others.I was summoned to struggle, to strive, to stride, to sacrifice, not to surrender, now or ever.
